African Origins of Blues

The Unrecorded History of Blues features artist in residence Guelel Kumba, a West African griot who discovered the ancient music of his people alive in Mississippi under the name Hill Country Blues. Kumba restores the function of Blues as a tool of oral history. This work bridges gaps in Black history by connecting this American art form with its ancestral art form and connecting oral histories from the era of blues to ancient oral histories before the middle passage - grounding us in the fact that our history did not begin in slavery! It’s a healing for all African American people.
